Require Expert MySQL Tuner To Eliminate Website Crashes

We have a two month old ecommerce site on a dedicated server operated by OVH in Montreal, Canada. We have recently hit traffic heights which have resulted in site crashes. The indications: - 'max_user_connections' active connections - TOO_MANY_USER_CONNECTIONS - MySQL server has gone away We have increased the connections number and done whatever we can to resolve the problem. We are now on an SMS alarm system which alerts us to site crash and we reboot the server to get it back working, but this is only a very temporary stopgap measure. We have a marketing program which is on hold until we can determine how to resolve this problem definitively as we could be seeing traffic levels 10x or more greater than the ones which have already brought down the site. Please provide an estimate as to cost and time in order to tune this MySQL function to allow for the traffic required. Do not hesitate to ask questions by private messaging. (Note that I also speak French natively if you prefer.) There are several different approaches we could take, so it makes bidding tricky, but here are my initial thoughts. They revolve mostly around the concept that it is usually more rewarding and scalable to optimize on the query and data structure side than to simply throw more resources (concurrent connections, etc.) at the bottleneck. 1. Making sure that tables which could benefit from it use InnoDB instead of MyISAM; 2. Making sure that the obvious choices for SELECT columns have indexes defined, and that column types were chosen judiciously (an extreme example would be a VARCHAR(255) to hold numbers when a simple INT would've sufficed); 3. Reviewing MySQL configuration for temporary table management parameters; 4. Looking for obvious optimization candidates in the slowest queries - those can then yield to two kinds of (easiest) optimization: first the query itself may be poorly structured (i.e. JOINs in sub-optimal order), and then MySQL's "EXPLAIN" statement can help pinpoint where to further create indexes, especially multi-column indexes where appropriate. 5. Considering options for increasing RAM on the server, which could allow us to make MySQL create temporary tables in RAM instead of on disk if you have unavoidable slow queries.
