I am building a ~3.1 x ~1.3m wooden slab and epoxy table that will seat up to 14 people. I expect the table top will weigh ~200kg when completed. I intend to support the tabletop using a stainless steel triangular truss subframe with hairpin-style legs at each corner. I work predominantly in wood and have some experience working with metal but not at this scale. I designed a truss subframe in Sketchup with 8mm solid rod for main beams and 6mm solid for bracing but was informed this size and type of material won’t be sufficient to withstand dynamic forces; I was advised to use larger diameter tube however I’m not sure how large is necessary. Also my customer has requested the frame take up as little visual space as possible, they want the tabletop to be the star of the show. I need help to complete the design to minimise frame size while ensuring safe operation for expected static and dynamic loads. The outcomes I believe I need are a recommendation on truss material size (diameter and wall thickness), an estimate of expected loads (is there a standard for dining table loading?) and design verification artefacts proving the ability of the design to withstand expected loads; I intend to have these artefacts reviewed to ensure validity so I can provide my customers with confidence the design is safe.
