I need to get a user's MAC address in a browser. This is for work computers and users can be aware of the plugin and what it is doing. The plugin needs to POST the MAC Address to a seperate php script/page. The control or plugin should work on the major browsers, IE, Chrome and Firefox. The goal of this project is to be used in the security layer of a web application login page. Users of this application will have their MAC address resolved to determine if the computer they are using is allowed to login to the web application. We were using a Java applet for this, but Chrome has deprecated this ability.

Hey, I can get you a user's MAC address from the browser. It will work on cross browser so don't worry. I have multiple solutions to get it. Are the users on the same LAN server where app is? There is probably no better way, since ActiveX will only work on Windows (and IE only), and there is no such API to get MAC address in any standard HTML or JavaScript. I don't know if Flash can be useful for this, but I doubt that. However, your reason to get user's MAC address may seem valid, but I still think it's not a good idea to deduce any information it, because it can be spoofed/changed and may not show properly in certain situations. You would do better, if you could come up with a better solution for your problem (not involving grabbing MAC addresses). Use mac address for computer authentication is not a safe approach. There are other options like using mutual authentication through certificates.
