Selecting a method and a type of sensor require more information such as: What is the substance? Is it corrosive? What is the temperature range? The liquid is moving or static? The surface of the substance in the cavity is at a fixed level or the surface is moving? Which are the properties of the substance (acoustic impedance, electric conductivity, dielectric constant, magnetic permeability, transparency, all of them for both, solid and liquid phases)? What is the size and shape of the cavity? What material is the cavity made of? Is the temperature distribution in the cavity completely homogeneous or are there temperature gradients? What is the desired error in determining the position of the phase change? Could it be taken for sure that there will be a level from which it can be considered that all the material will be solid or liquid? What is the thickness of the solid - liquid interface?
