For example I can simulate a mobile platform robot in Simulink. I can use a model including its physical dimensions and rigid body dynamics. And there will be a path defined as a sequence of waypoints. The control algorithm will interpolate between them to generate appropriate signals to the wheel motors. The control algorithm will be kind of hierarchical including low level motor dynamics compensation and high level trajectory following algorithm.
