Maelezo ya Shindano

I need a parametrically designed, modified "French Cleat" mount to be used for 5S organization projects and other tool organization and storage which will be 3D Printed on an Ender 3. For a profile, 5/16" X 2-1/2" is the ideal starting point, with 2 opposite sides being chamfered at 45 Degrees but only half way through the thickness of the print (doesn't come to a point like a typical French Cleat!). Being parametrically designed (properly constrained) means that I will be able to change a dimension (or angle) and have the corresponding 3D model redraw to these dimensions (using Fusion360 or other CAD package). The other limitation for 3D printing is the length of the cleat which must not exceed 220mm X 220mm. If I want longer French cleats, the design must incorporate a dovetail or other stronger system that connects along the LONGEST axis AND Lengthwise (215mm or close to, not exceeding 8-1/2" or it will not fir on the printer). The connection MUST slide the two sticks together overlapping along the length. 2-1/2 to 3" of overlap should work well in a dovetail or rounded dovetail (after all 3D printers can round edges to reduce sharp point loads). Don't exceed 45 Degrees though, this doesn't print well without support materials. The goal initially is to be able to slide together multiple pieces to get a total of 50" in length. At regular intervals (say every 2" or so) there must be a hole placed with a conical bevel for a typical screw - I'd like it to be inset by an additional 1/8" in case I want to cover the screw with a screw cap. I'd like this inset to be 6-sided so that I could ALSO use it to mount attachments by way of pressing in a hex nut on the wall side of the mount. I'd like it to be reversible (mirrored) so that I can screw it into something regardless of if it's the front or the back of the cleat. As it's parametric, I can change all these values later. I'll also need the corresponding end caps designed that slide into the final end pieces of the assembled French Cleat stick - these should have at least 1 screw hole the same as described above. The cap covers should also be designed with a way to remove them later. As a bonus, if along with your entry you can include a 3D printable AI generated design (REF: https://cormack.xyz/GenerativeDesign/). As an added bonus, if you can include at least one French Cleat attachment for a common tool such as a cordless drill, storage for 3D filament rolls, or other tool or parts organization typically used in a MakerSpace or Wood Shop. The files should be submitted on Freelancer AND linked to and external service such as Google Drive. The format must be *.3MF AND *.DXF (OR *.DWG OR similar) so I can later edit the file and change any dimensions to suit the new project. This project may get revisited again to design storage and other components for this system in a future project. Here is a similar example but not connected in a strong way (along the length) and also not quite the profile I described above, ref: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4300323/files. Best of luck!

It was not one of your requirements for the design: "I'll also need the corresponding end caps designed that slide into the final end pieces of the assembled French Cleat stick - these should have at least 1 screw hole the same as described above. " ? Just asking!

Thank you for grading my design. It was something in particular you was looking for in order to make your design better? Just for myself, to improve my performance in to the future!

I've extended the contest as there are at least 4 entries being worked on that could benefit from a 5 day extension. Freelancer adds half of the extension fee to the contest total so I believe the total prize should be about $110. I'm thus far impressed with many of the entries. Good luck!

There are parts of the design I like but it doesn't connect well along the long axis and it's not reversible unless you are stacking one on top of the other. The part I like about it is that the channeled part in the middle removes material but probably will not adversely affect strength (assuming the wall it's screwed into will strengthen it). This means, for 3D printing, less material is needed to do this design. Overall it's a good design but not what I'm looking for on this project. I'd like to keep in touch though - you are a good designer who is thinking of some things I didn't even ask you to consider (material usage, etc.).

thanks very much for the feedback. Now i get the "half way point of the chamfer".
I will retake the contest and send you some more proposals through this week.

Sadly i cant give you a generative design with my actual software (limited for my actual hardware), but if you can get a fusion 360 pro version or an autodesk inventor version (2020 or higher, i have 2015) i can make a design that will fit well with this feature, in a way you just need to import the file.

I manage the theory of FEA analysis (needed in the generative designs i know, where you put the forces in action), and later, must be just importing and use this automatic feature.

      Greetings

Added a quick sketch of the main profile in the details area for you. I didn't extrude it yet but thus far nobody has connected the segments in a strong way along the longest axis or added holes in the way I've described. Hope that helps.

Hi. Does it really need to be Fusion ? This will drastically limit the number of freelancer. Fusion is not a very popular CAD software.

Doesn't need to be, as long as it can be converted or exported to formats that will work on 3D printing and I have a format that has the parametric data associated with it. I don't want to have to redraw for other sizes in the future.

After feedback, I'm accepting other file types as long as they can be converted and still work. Inventor or Fusion - whichever you feel is best for you.

por cierto, si quieres parametrizar todo y el envío en distintos formatos, deberías subir algo más ;)

Saving in multiple formats shouldn't be an issue. The description took longer than is would for me to sketch it; I'm mainly farming for better approaches while I test materials on the 3D printer. The last contest at $100 produced two very good results, and I paid the second place $80 for their design. In the future, If I need something more complex, I may consider increasing the prize. Thanks for your honest feedback; it's appreciated.

Answers & Clarification: 1.) Doesn't need to be in Fusion, but must be in a valid CAD format that can be used in other programs, either by importing/exporting or by converting. 2.) The design is intended to be a mirror along the centre lines (front and back, top and bottom). I'm seeing some designs that will not work in this manner. 3.) The connection MUST be a sliding type along the longest axis; my preference is for at least enough overlap to run a screw through the connection (or optionally a bolt/nut with the inset if it can't be screwed at that point), which adds additional strength. 4.) The French Cleat portion must only go 1/2 way through the thickness (more like a chamfer), otherwise it will not work in the manner I'd like it to, and it needs to work even if installed upside-down. 5.) The screw taper and the inset for a nut must show on both sides of the mounting holes. Again, for ease of use and the ability to mount upside down and still have it function well. Hope that helps.
