I am starting a wood carving business. Our vision is to carve up-scale, high quality wood products such as (but not limited to) the following: 3D relief carved doors, fireplace mantels, cabinet doors, wooden games like cribbage boards, cigar humidors, boxes for cremation remains, jewelry boxes, etc. Right now all of our sales are happening through online advertising and are custom pieces. Our goal is to start getting our product into gift shops and getting to the point where we can outsource some of our manufacturing. Most of our wood carving is not done by hand but is carved on a CNC router from a digital model. We need a logo for obvious reasons.

I want the logo to be simple and memorable. It needs to look good either in black and white or in color. I am thinking only 2 colors for the color version. I also need a vector format which can be V-carved into wood. If you aren't already familiar with vcarving, the way it works is a V-bit with a particular width and angle (for example, 90-degree angle and 1/2 inch wide) carves in between the vectors at depths that very based on the width of the vector lines. It needs two CLOSED vectors to carve between. For example, if the vector lines are .1'' at one point and then within the same closed vector widen to .13'' apart, the vbit will automatically carve to whatever depth it can attain based on the angle of the bit so that the carved v-groove touches the inside of both vectors. The .1'' will be shallower than the .13''. See attached images for examples of this vcarving and some of our wood-carving projects. The ability to have it look good when Vcarved into wood is important because many of my products will have the logo carved into the wood instead of having a label or sticker.

I like a decent mixture of bold angles and distinct curves in a logo. The simpler the better as long as it conveys a bold and memorable image. I want the logo to appeal to rustic local Montana and tourists to our area but keep in mind my goal is to get some of my products into nationwide store chains. I don't necessarily need a hammer and a chisel in the logo (that would be too complicated anyway) but, at the same time, when people see the name of the business "Montana Carvers" I want them to think "ahh, that logo makes sense as belonging to a wood carving business." I want it to be elegant enough that it conveys we make a quality, custom-style product but I also want it to make sense posted on a billboard.
