<Overview>

<Technology Description>
This technology reduces the amount of communication data when performing OTA updates for vehicle software.
When the OTA update for the vehicle software is performed, there are two methods:
(1) indirect method via a user’s smartphone (the update data is transmitted from the server to the smartphone, and then the received data is transmitted from the smartphone to the vehicle); and
(2) direct method without going through the smartphone (the update data is transmitted from the server to the vehicle directly).
In both methods, information on the transmission status of the update data (e.g. “XX% transmitted”, “XX seconds until transmission complete”) is transmitted from the server to the smartphone.
However, in the indirect method, the smartphone may be able to recognize the update data transmission status from its own update data reception status without receiving information about the update data transmission status from the server. Therefore, there was a possibility that useless data communication would occur.
In order to solve this problem, in this technology, in the indirect pattern, the amount of information on the transmission status of update data is reduced compared to the direct pattern, and the information is transmitted from the server to the smartphone. In addition, in the indirect pattern, instead of information on the transmission status of update data, the smartphone may display the reception status of update data (e.g. XX% received, XX seconds until reception (download) is completed).
