We are a start-up language publishing company based in Scotland.
Our business aim is to create quality learning materials in minority languages, many of which do not currently exist in English. Our social mission is to help preserve and expand the usage of minority languages.
We are looking for freelancers who can help us expand our portfolio. We ideally want to develop long-term relationships with successful freelancers, who will help us with voiceovers, editing, proof reading etc as our projects develop.
The initial project :
We have a list of 11743 words arranged thematically across 5 levels (approximately corresponding from A1 to C1 CEFR levels). Some languages have the base level complete so reckon on 10,000 to translate.
For example, on the section on felines:
Level 1 - Cat
Level 2 - Lion, tiger
Level 3 - Kitten
Level 4 - Cheetah, leopard
Level 5 - Might include less-used words such as stray cat, cat-flap and puma
It would therefore be understandable if some research was needed for Level 5 words, especially for the lesser-spoken languages.
We would send you an excel file with the words in English in one column, and you would need to translate into the target language in the next column.
This is purely a word list at this stage and we would not expect you to translate any sentences/phrases.
Depending on the language, you may also need to include stress, gender marker and/ or irregular plural form
Eg rabbit
das Kanninchen (-) German (showing gender/ plural)
d'Kanéngchen (Kanéngercher) (n) Luxembourgish (showing gender/ plural)
conejo m Spanish (showing gender)
крóлик Russian (showing stress)
We would prefer fixed price offers but understand there are a few variables. If you have experience of this type of project and can give an accurate estimate, please submit.
If not, please submit a per hour (with estimate of number of hours) or fixed price based on 1000 words.
The languages we are initially looking for are:
Afrikaans, Albanian, Basque, Breton, Bulgarian, Catalan, Cornish, Corsican, Czech. Faroese, Finnish, Greek, Irish, Ladino, Lithuanian, Latvian, Luxemburgish, Macedonian, Maltese, Manx, Mari, Occitian, Platt (Low German), Romanian, Saami, Sicilian Sorbian, Tatar, Yiddish
If you are a translator/ speaker of another lesser taught language (ie not French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian) not listed above, please get in touch too so that we have a ready network for future projects.
We look forward to hearing from you!
