News and Directory Portal

A Buyer's Guide type directroy is required to be bolted onto a portal. This can project can be appraised as a replacement or rework of an existing but unfinished Content Management System, which is bespoke and written in .NET.

Assuming a new implementation, an ASP.NET /MS SQL web site is preferred, but PHP and My SQL will be considered. This project requires good database skills; don’t underestimate the complexity and detail required. Good visual presentation is also required.

The concept is to integrate a media site [url removed, login to view] with a Buyer’s Guide type directory. Integration means that in addition to accessing the directory via the menu, that appropriate Buyer’s Guide directory categories appear at the bottom of articles.

For example, if the article has “Widget” metadata attached to it, and there are Widget manufacturers in the directory, then a “Widget” Buyer’s Guide hyperlink appears at the bottom of the article, which on click lists “Widget” manufacturers, which can then be drilled down to an individual record where “Widget” is assigned as a capability.

The individual directory record page is a micro site presented as a single page with visual tabs that when clicked display Company Profile; Company Uploaded Articles; Catalogs (listing of Word or PDF files for viewing or download); Events Diary; any articles on the portal associated by metadata with that company’s record. Any unused tabs should be hideable by a check box in the admin screen.

All records should be editable by their owners, i.e. companies using a login and password, and all content on the site should go through an approval process, including details and files uploaded by Companies.

CMS Requirements

• The article management CMS should be flexible for users, not hard coded with some editable sections:

• WYSIWYG editor

• User creatable menu items

• User selectable templates

• Workflow

• Content Staging (can be later stage)

• Versioning (can be later stage)

• Multilingual support

• User roles (e.g. super user, staff, customer, guest access have different permissions)

• Custom document types and custom fields

• Friendly URLs and SEO

• Ideally supports ASP.NET 2.0

• Image thumbnails generated on the fly for listing pages (using an image taken from articles

• Advanced Search page, selectable whether to search the whole site, articles, directory etc.

The Buyer’s Guide Directory

The directory integrates at article creation time whereby:

Company Name (taken from the directory can be assigned)

PR Agency (taken from the directory can be assigned)

Capabilities (taken from the directory can be assigned – used to associate articles with the directory, and generate the appropriate Buyer’s Guide links at the bottom of the article.

When viewing the directory record, the company’s capabilities are hyperlinked to a listing page of other companies with the same capability. i.e. “Widgets” would list all “Widgets” companies.

The Directory has different levels: The basic and enhanced directory do not integrate with articles, the standard and showcase Buyer’s Guide do.

Notes

1. Only communications via this system will be accepted for bids.

2. No work should be started before a contract is agreed.

5. ASP.NET source code is for [url removed, login to view] is available for the original bespoke software.

6. A good reference site to look at is [url removed, login to view], though [url removed, login to view] is complex and has parts lists and other functions that will not be included here.

7. If starting from scratch please state which CMS you are using, if not bespoke. e.g. Kentico

8. The Developer will have to upload the Portal to web hosting, and agree support costs.

9. There will be other functions added later, so I’m looking for long term relationship with a stable company.

10. All IP and source code will belong to us at the end of project(s).

11. A detailed specification and look and feel should be agreed before starting work.

12. Most of the above assumes replacement. The developer may also choose to use the existing bespoke ASP.NET Portal software on which to implement the Buyer’s Guide Directory, but will then also have to implement friendly URLs, a decent search engine, and a couple of other tweaks if that’s the chosen route.

13. The technology offered should be scaleable. e.g. able to withstand a significant number of hits a day, by database clustering, server load balancing or whatever appropriate means.

14. Any CMS created should be portable. It will be adapted and deployed on other sites.

15. No offence intended, but I don’t really want a long sales pitch from vendors; just sample site(s) with significant database work. If you haven’t done significant database work before, sorry, I cannot consider you for this.
