Operate an Escape Room During a Convention

I operate a small business called Pop-Up Escape Rooms. Basically, when a comic/gaming/anime convention comes to Chicago, I load up a bunch of props, set up a live adventure room, then run it for the attendees. I only do this a handful of times a year and I usually do it all by myself. But C2E2 is coming up on December 10-12 at McCormick Place in Chicago. This is a huge comic book convention and I want us to host two separate rooms. I will be directing one room, which means I want to hire one or two Live Adventure Directors to be entrusted with managing, operating and directing the other room. Live Adventure Directors will be in charge of running, managing and directing their very own room. This includes briefing and welcoming players, directing and operating the room and resetting the room for the next group. I will be directing a sci-fi room called “Secret Aboard Starship Astraeus” while you will be directing a horror room called “Detention: Escape from the Cursed High School.” You and your classmates must report to Room 202 for detention. But the classroom has been cursed by an onryō, a vengeful spirit, who has trapped you in the room! You have only 45 minutes to solve puzzles and riddles using clues and hints to escape the room and achieve one of several possible endings. Will you find a way to break the curse, or will you be stuck in detention forever? You can see photos and a video of this live adventure room at [login to view URL] Welcoming new groups and resetting the room are the most important duties of a director. But you will also be operating the room. While “Detention” does not require a lot of operation once players have begun, a director is able to control aspects of the room (such as sounds and remote lighting) to enhance the experience for the players as they see fit. A lot of this is left up to the creativity and discretion of the director. Every group is different so imagine manipulating a room to create a spooky ambience for the players. I am looking to hire one, or preferably, two people to direct Detention. You will be entirely responsible for the room as I will be completely preoccupied running “Secret Aboard Starship Astraeus” which requires constant direction. We are running these rooms nonstop during the convention and there will not be any time for breaks and you will need to bring your own lunch. However, if we have two directors there will be more opportunities for breaks and you can split your time if things are going smoothly. I need to be able to trust the directors to take care of Detention and trust them to make decisions as they see fit. Pop-Up Escape Rooms hosts these Live Adventure Rooms at conventions in Chicago and sometimes as far as Milwaukee or Indianapolis. So there will be future opportunities to work together again. Duties: Welcoming guests into the escape room, briefing them and making sure the right people are there and they have tickets. Directing the escape room. Playing audio cues, triggering lighting effects. A lot of this is done at your own discretion to create the best experience for the players. It’s like running your own mini haunted house. Resetting the escape room. Putting props back where they started so the next group can play. This isn’t easy as Detention has a lot of props and things can get quite messy. You’ll need ten minutes at least. Hours: Training: 2.5 hours on Thursday Dec 9 at McCormick Place I will be setting up both rooms on Wednesday and Thursday. But I need directors to arrive and be trained on how to manage and operate the room. 10:00 am to 12:00 am Friday and Saturday (December 10-11) and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Sunday (December 12) Sessions start at 10:30 and go every hour. There is a small window of non-play time between 2:30 and 3:00.
