I have been in the academia for more than 10 years now. If you ask me why I became a professor and a researcher, I will probably say, “I certainly do not know for sure.”
I could invent a couple of fancy and cool explanations, in order to make a good impression, such as I was born to be a teacher, or that, writing articles is a joy in life. But, all those, wouldn’t be true. The truth, I would say, is that academia is my job, not my passion. However, I am very professional, productive and proficient in my work, because I believe the role of the professors in the society is essential. The main difference between working in the academia, and in other sectors, is that the impact of our academic work is much higher than many people perceive, especially teaching. The type of classes that teachers perform and the way of transmitting knowledge affect the students, students’ families, initiatives they may develop, and the way they work later. Now, think for a moment, about the professor you remember the most. Surely, you realized, that, that instructor had some degree of influence on how you work nowadays. How you teach, how you value educational performance, how you treat students or the type of research you do. Professors have a lot of influence in the kind of society that is created
