A coating can be applied to a variety of different materials, usually involving an adhesive layer being applied to a finished product. An example of this is plastic drinks bottles; the coating in this case is the label which has one side coated in adhesive, and the other side printed with the product imagery (decorative coatings). When applying a coating a requirement is that the coating is of equal thickness all round, and in cases where the coating doesn’t cover the whole of the object, accuracy in its application. The coating itself may be applied in any state, be it liquid, solid or gas.

Material coating is a skill required in a multitude of industries, and may be applied by hand or by use of machinery. By hand, the use of a correct brush can create an even layer, while industrial methods may proffer the ‘web’ method, or ‘roll to roll’ method. In this case the substrates begin, and end, in a roll. Material coating has its uses in fabric production, cookware, photography, waterproofing and insulation among many others. From non-stick pans to iron-on fabric interfacing, the uses of material coatings are diverse.

Material coatings can add as USP to a product, and ensure its longevity. This allows a brand to build up a good reputation, increase number of repeat customers, and also charge more for their products.
