NASA Contest: Design an Attachment Mechanism

Maelezo ya Shindano

Design an Attachment Mechanism (AM)

In this challenge, you are asked to design an Attachment Mechanism (AM) that will be mounted to, and being controlled and powered by a separately designed robotic arm. This challenge is focused on the electro-mechanical system only (i.e., no internal computing or circuitry)

How it works: Initially, the AM will be packed in a stowed configuration. When powered and controlled, the AM must be capable of executing five high-level actions:
1) unpack in preparation for placement near a Handrail,
2) close on the Handrail,
3) maintain a hold on the handrail for an extended period of time,
4) release from the handrail, and
5) pack back into the initial stowed configuration.

Click on the attachments below to see
1) the AM Problem Description, which provides more detailed instructions about all the requirements your design needs to meet;
2) AM Solution Guidelines, which details the format an content that your submission must follow; and 3) the templates that are referenced in the solution guidelines. Microsoft Excel and Open Office Calc formats are attached below.

Challenge rules:
- The prize will be awarded for the lowest mass, technically feasible solution, submitted by the contest deadline.
- No working prototype is required for submission, but the design must be sufficiently detailed to allow experts to assess the feasibility of your design (i.e., comply with all requirements) and the credibility of your mass estimate.
- Only complete submission packages will be evaluated (see attachments).

NASA may select multiple winners or provide additional prize compensation on entries that are particularly novel or innovative.

NASA will be available to respond to clarifying questions, but feedback on quality is otherwise limited.
All complete submissions will be confirmed with 3-star ratings.
Note that final judgement of quality and winners will only happen after the submission deadline.

You may add components that either fit in the through hole if the sensing element or fit around it, but modification is not possible. For future challenges, what would you recommend changing about this sensor?

The one you proposed is good. Probably in a challenge like this one, in which spaces must be optimized at millimeters resolution, I think a 9 mm sensing element due a lot of space waste. Thats all. So no modifies, I will take some step back. Thanks

The maximum limits of size while the AM is moving is the dynamic envelope, but when not moving, the AM must fit within one the configuration envelopes (stowed, open, and attached) as specified by the requirements.

I know it could seem an irrelevant question, but I was thinking about the principle of the lowest mass mentioned in PDF too. The solution I had devised would have led to a volume saving in open and attached fase, and of course, the dynamic envelope and mass too. By the way, I'll approach it differently. Thanks

    Hi,
Please could you elaborate on requirement 14 regarding loops of material not greater than 25.4mm.
When is it applicable? Would a finger of a grabber be regarded as a loop of material?
Maybe by providing an example or purpose would help contextualize this requirement.
    Thank you in advance.

      • Miaka 5 iliyopita

R14 is included as a requirement to reduce the likelihood that Astrobee would get entangled on part of the AM when it is attached to a Handrail. An example of a loop of material that would violate this requirement would be a loop of cable or string that extends 40 mm away from the rest of the structure of your solution in the Attached configuration.

Yes you can submit other types of graphics. This is stated in the submission guidelines (attachments to the contest page):
You can use any CAD software you like, sketch them by hand, or photograph a prototype, but accurate dimensions of the whole system are required. At minimum, you must indicate the position of every electro-mechanical component (e.g., actuators and sensors, but not individual bolts). On each figure, please label as many elements and subassemblies as possible. Use the names specified in your Mass Summary and Component List (section 2).

You should be able to see a total of 4 challenges. They are all related to the Astrobee robotic arm. Each has a different scope with some being a subset of of the whole arm while others include more. We are trying to see if we get innovative approaches by breaking it up in different work package. The prize level reflects the scope and complexity of each contest. You can submit entries for as many of the contests as you want.
